This expensive coffee drink used to be unpopular in the US, especially in NYC, but it’s now renowned today.

BMC has a higher price tag because of its high demand. To harvest a good quality Blue Mountain Coffee, farmers wait ten months, with 80% of the production being exported to Japan, followed by Europe.

Blue Mountain Coffee’s Story

Everything started in 1723 when King Louis XV sent three different coffee plants to southwest Jamaica. The country had become the world’s largest coffee producer from 1800 to 1840,  producing over 70,000 tons of coffee annually.

The name “Blue Mountain Coffee” came from where it was planted and harvested. The Blue Mountains can be seen on the eastern side of Jamaica, elevated at 2,350 meters with fertile and volcanic soil.

Brew a Blue Mountain Coffee

There are three methods to create your own Blue Mountain Coffee:

  1. Brewing K-Cup pods in a Keurig machine
  2. French press
  3. Pour-over.

Ingredients:

  • Whole beans of roasted Blue Mountain Coffee
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Milk
  • Coffee grinder
  • Kettle with gooseneck shaped spout
  • Kitchen thermometer

Step 1: Prepare The Water

Boil the water to 196°F. Use the thermometer to ensure the water temperature is correct, as it can burn the beans. It will taste stale when the temperature is too cold.

Step 2: Prepare The Coffee

Immediately grind your whole beans into medium size. Do not grind the beans before boiling the water to keep the flavors and aroma.

Place the filter above the kettle and carefully transfer the medium grind coffee to it.

Slowly pour the hot water into the filter and serve.

Step 3: Sweeten The Coffee (Optional)

This is optional as the coffee is already sweet and creamy, but you can add sugar and milk according to taste.
