If you like the taste of coffee blends, you may have heard of Yuban coffee.

Yuban has been on the market since 1905. According to their website, each container of coffee uses 100% Arabica beans. They have a variety of flavors, including hazelnut and dark roast original blends.

The Yuban Coffee Company is known for being eco-conscious. Yuban received its Rainforest Alliance certification in 2006 for using ecologically-sensitive growing methods for at least 30% of its beans. At least 30% of their coffee beans are grown organically without chemicals and pesticides.

Though it may not be as popular as other national brands, they have a long history and a variety of coffee blends available.

Yuban Coffee Company

John and Charles Arbuckle invented the Yuban brand. The brothers were famous coffee roasters during the 1860s who patented a sugar and egg glaze roasting process to seal in the flavor of the beans over a campfire or wood stove. Before this, coffee beans came in their original green color and had to roast over a fire.

The Arbuckle brothers also credit themselves with being one of the first coffee companies to distribute one-pound bags of coffee. In 1905, John Arbuckle invented the first Yuban blend.

Legend says that the name came from Arbuckle’s Yuletide banquets, which combined the YU and BAN and referenced the remarkable combination he would serve at his Yuletide dinners. This blend used South American coffee beans specifically selected for their high quality and freshness and was served exclusively during special occasions.

Yuban is the only brand that survived after the family broke up the company in the 1930s. Yuban has lasted about 110 years, though changes have occurred over time. In 1994, Kraft Heinz Company incorporated Yuban Coffee Company as a subsidiary.

Since Kraft took the company in, they have become more environmentally friendly with a certification from the Rainforest Alliance. The Yuban coffee canisters consist of 50% or more recycled materials. Some containers claim to be 100% recyclable as well.

Rainforest Alliance

In recent years, Yuban Coffee Company has become known for its strives to become more environmentally conscious and labor-friendly. They received the Rainforest Alliance certificate in 2006.

The Rainforest Alliance requires organic farming methods and no pesticides or chemical fertilizers in the growing process on at least 30% of their crops. These farms and companies must also provide healthcare and fair wages to workers and produce high-quality products.

Certification teams enforce these standards and suggest ways to improve efficiency by conducting local audits on the farms every year. Not all of their products are Rainforest Alliance certified, but you can look for the label on the canister to see if it is.

Yuban Products

Yuban coffee offers many different blends. They sell ground coffee in stores, whole beans, and K-Cup pods. Some of the most popular Yuban products are their Gold Medium Roast – which is pure, 100% Arabica coffee with a smooth and less acidic flavor.

Their Yuban Dark Roast ground coffee is also prevalent among those who enjoy a robust and bold flavor. This product has the Rainforest Alliance certification for 30% of its coffee beans, meaning it is at least 30% organic.

For those who own a Keurig or another single-use pod machine, the Yuban K-Cups work in all Keurig machines. These pods also contain 100% Arabica beans for a quick coffee fix. The Yuban Colombian K-Cup exceptionally retains the full-bodied flavor without bitterness.
