Every once in a while, I need to take a break from drinking coffee. Whether for a day, a week, or much longer, sometimes my body doesn’t respond well to the caffeine in my morning ritual. That being said, I still love being able to drink a hot cup of something to get my day started, even if it doesn’t pack the caffeine punch that coffee does.

MUD\WTR – with only one-seventh the amount of caffeine as a normal cup of coffee – is one of the top coffee alternative products on the market today and one of my go-to choices when I am taking a coffee break. My partner happens to be vegan, so I had to find the answer to “MUD\WTR vegan?” before introducing her.

Fortunately, MUD\WTR products are vegan. Plus, they use only organic ingredients to make all of their products. As such, MUD\WTR is an excellent choice for any vegans looking to replace their morning cup of Joe.

What Exactly Is MUD\WTR Vegan?

MUD\WTR has something that coffee does not – an organic blend of adaptogenic mushrooms packed with health benefits. The original MUD\WTR Rise blend is essentially a black masala chai tea combined with an organic mushroom blend. The result is a superfood combination to get your day started; just add hot water!

The MUD\WTR Mushroom Blend

MUD\WTR’s mushroom blend is comprised of four distinct mushrooms: Chaga, reishi, cordyceps, and lion’s mane. Each of these mushrooms is prized for its adaptogenic health benefits and for providing natural energy to the drinker.

An adaptogen is a supplement that helps the body respond effectively to physical and mental stress, promoting a quick recovery from such events. Each of these mushrooms has been prized for centuries for its health benefits, so I wanted to dive in to learn more about each one.

Chaga

Chaga is a fungus native to northern Europe and Russia that has long been known for its medicinal properties. It typically grows on the bark of birch trees and some other trees native to this region.

Traditionally, it was ground and brewed into a hot beverage, much like the form it takes in MUD\WTR today. The medical community has come to better understand the overall benefits of this mushroom.

High in antioxidants, Chaga helps to reduce inflammation in the body. It is also understood to help keep blood sugar levels down and lower cholesterol.

Reishi

Reishi has been prized in China, Japan, and other Asian countries for millennia for its medicinal benefits. It was long sought after by royalty in the region, gaining near-mythical status.

This mushroom is known to improve the functioning of the immune system, helping both to stop general illness and ward off cancer in the long run. Some studies have even shown that reishi may be beneficial for those recovering from cancer. Research has also found that consuming reishi can also improve heart health, control blood sugar, and improve fatigue and achiness in the body.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps may be best known for their often gruesome-seeming life cycle. This fungus gets inside insects and essentially consumes the organism as it grows. This is as about as hardcore as nature gets!

Cordyceps and insects infected with cordyceps have long been collected for their immense medicinal value. First, cordyceps is known to improve physical activity by promoting the production of ATP – the primary fuel for our muscles.

The high antioxidant count in cordyceps has also made it prize as a “fountain of youth.” It can also help tackle inflammation.

Like other mushrooms in this blend, cordyceps can also help with controlling blood sugar and improving heart health. The good news is that we are not insects, and so cordyceps is only here to help us feel better!

Lion’s Mane

Lion’s mane is best known for its cognitive benefits, improving memory, attention span, and overall cognitive functioning. It has long been prized in traditional Chinese medicine for its numerous benefits.

There are several benefits to incorporating lion’s mane mushrooms into your diet. It can help to reduce the risk of developing some kinds of cancer, boost energy, and help manage depression. Interestingly, lion’s mane is understood to be beneficial to people who have suffered a stroke – this is in line with the understanding that lion’s mane is a superfood for the brain!

As well, lion’s mane is believed to help with blood sugar control. All of the mushrooms in the MUD\WTR blend are understood to help with controlling blood sugar. As such, people with diabetes should talk to their doctor about the potential benefits of consuming MUD\WTR.

MUD\WTR Chai Tea Blend

The other component of MUD\WTR is the chai tea blend. The blend brings the rich, spicy flavor of chai tea with a less intense dose of caffeine than your average cup of coffee.

Like most chai tea, MUD\WTR blends black tea power with an organic spice blend made of cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves. The tea provides about one-seventh of the caffeine of coffee, and the spice blend provides a rich flavor with numerous health benefits.

Health Benefits Of Chai Tea

There are numerous known health benefits to drinking chai tea. This is because black tea and the spices used in making chai are rich in nutrients that can do wonders.

First, black tea and cardamon are rich in antioxidants, so chai tea is excellent for your immune system. The wide range of spices used is also excellent for fighting off inflammation. The combination of turmeric and black pepper, in particular, has long been prized for its ability to ward off inflammation and improve overall well-being.

Packed with cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, chai tea is not only great for the immune system but also has anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties, which help to fight off illness. Plus, the combination of spices tastes wonderful! Finally, like with the mushroom blend, chai tea is known to help with managing blood sugar levels.

Other MUD\WTR Products

MUD\WTR has begun to offer a wider range of beverages as well that are worth mentioning. In addition, they also offer a creamer and sweetener of their own, packed with health benefits. Each of these offerings is vegan, non-GMO, certified organic, and gluten-free!

MUD\WTR Matcha

Matcha works well as an iced beverage

For folks who prefer matcha to chai tea, MUD\WTR has released its own signature matcha blend. With the same adaptogenic mushroom blend, MUD\WTR provides another coffee alternative.

It took me a while to come around to enjoy matcha. I take mine with a nice spoonful (or two) of honey. It also works well as an iced beverage paired with your favorite creamer (whether vegan or not!).

Where the original MUD\WTR chai tea blend feels closer to a coffee replacement, the matcha feels more like its own beverage. I like having it in our pantry over other matcha brands since it also has the healthful mushroom blend.

MUD\WTR Afternoon Blend

MUD\WTR now offers a caffeine afternoon blend, their turmeric “balance” beverage. This blend is essentially a mushroom-enhanced golden milk! And, of course, it is vegan.

The afternoon blend gets its golden color and rich flavor from a hearty dose of turmeric. This is the perfect beverage for folks looking for a caffeine-free option to enjoy while working in the afternoon. Even decaf coffee has a little bit of caffeine, so this is for those who truly mean no caffeine.

The mushroom blend and turmeric do offer a natural energy that can help with staying focused throughout the work day, plus all the previous health benefits mentioned before. I am, as well, quite fond of the golden hue of turmeric, and the flavor provides the perfect spice and warmth.

MUD\WTR Evening Blend

MUD\WTR also offers their Rest evening blend to have before bed. This beverage was designed to provide the many health benefits of MUD\WTR’s mushroom blend without the jitters.

Instead of black tea, the evening blend’s chai is made with rooibos, the much-loved South African bush tea. This is blended with chamomile to create the perfect soothing tea to get you ready for bedtime.

The evening blend also includes turkey tail mushroom, valerian root, passionflower, and ashwagandha. Essentially, they replaced the energizing mushrooms with mushrooms and herbs that promote relaxation and restful sleep.

MUD\WTR Mushroom Boost

If you just want MUD\WTR for the adaptogenic mushrooms, MUD\WTR also offer a mushroom boost blend featuring every kind of mushroom they could think of. This blend features Chaga, cordyceps, king trumpet, lion’s mane, reishi, turkey tail, maitake, and shiitake mushrooms.

In addition to the benefits described before, king trumpet, turkey tail, maitake, and shiitake mushrooms can help strengthen your immune system. Overall, this is the product for anyone who cares solely about the health benefits of the mushroom blend – this is an excellent choice if you want to keep drinking coffee but would like to get the benefits of the mushrooms as well. Just blend it right in!

MUD\WTR Creamer

The other good news for vegans wanting to try MUD\WTR is that they also offer a vegan creamer as well! While on some occasions, I enjoy a black cup of coffee; I tend to dress my drinks up with cream and sugar.

The primary ingredients in the creamer are organic coconut milk powder and organic MCT powder. MCT oil is a healthy fat that helps sustain slow-burning energy all day long.

For texture, the creamer also contains acacia fiber and tapioca starch. What is also nice is that the product keeps very well, since it is dried and you simply add it to water.

MUD\WTR Sweetener

MUD\WTR also offers its own sweetener blend, in case you prefer a little sugar with your morning beverage. The blend is two parts coconut sugar to one part lúcuma (pronounced loo-koo-mah). On their site, they note that lúcuma was a fruit prized by the Incas for its butterscotch and caramel flavor.

For folks looking for a healthier sweetener option, this blend of coconut sugar and lúcuma is an excellent choice, whether you are drinking MUD\WTR or not. However, if you typically like to add sugar to your coffee, you may find that this sweetener is not as sweet as standard sugar.

Purchasing MUD\WTR

It is easy and simple to start ordering MUD\WTR straight from their website. You can order a product as a one-time purchase or sign-up for a subscription. Subscription options are available for receiving products once every 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on your needs.

MUD\WTR sells all of its products in two sizes: 30 servings or 90 servings. Purchasing the larger 90-serving size will save you a little over 20% per individual serving compared to purchasing the 30-serving size multiple times.

Additionally, signing up for the subscription service will save you around 33% per order. As such, the most cost-effective option is to get a subscription to the 90 serving-size bags! You might also be interested in these MUD/WTR alternatives for those on a budget.

The Starter Kit Is A Necessary Purchase

Use a frother to ensure that the MUD\WTR blends perfectly

Finally, if you are new to drinking MUD\WTR, let me emphasize – you need to start by purchasing a starter kit. The starter kit includes their high-powered frother, which is a lifesaver.

The primary challenge of drinking MUD\WTR is that the powders are difficult to blend into the water. This is why they offer the frother in each starter kit, as these frothers ensure that the MUD\WTR blends perfectly.

Plus, we use our MUD\WTR frother for all sorts of culinary projects. Some may argue that the frother itself is the best product that MUD\WTR offers and is well worth purchasing the starter kit. Without the frother, getting MUD\WTR to blend well can be a bit trickier – the last thing we want in the morning is for making our coffee (or coffee replacement) to be frustrating!

Additionally, the starter kits come with samples of the sweetener and creamer, so you can try them before committing. Plus, it comes with a guidebook to teach you more about the benefits of MUD\WTR and some stickers! If you’re still on the fence, check out our reasons why mushroom coffee is a must-try.
