Have you ever wondered how many Peet’s Coffee stores are there? Peet’s Coffee portfolio boasts 370 coffee bars in the United States and China as of December 2022. In 2017, the coffee giant opened its first international location in Shanghai, China, and soon prepared to open its first United Arab Emirates (UAE) store by the end of 2022.

This California-based specialty roastery has most of its locations based in the US, particularly on the West Coast. California is home to the most locations with 236 stores. What’s so special about Peets that makes it a leading coffee brand? Let’s find out in this article.

Peet’s Coffee At A Glance

Peet’s Coffee was opened by Alfred Peet back in 1966 with a mission to deliver the highest quality whole beans and craft “coffee-first” beverages. Fast forward to 2012, the coffee titan was acquired by Germany’s JAB Holding Co. Today, the reputation of the brand is still going strong thanks to a wonderful dark roast profile, with Major Dickason Blend being the best seller.

With a close relationship between Peet and the three co-founders of Starbucks, Peet’s became the inspiration for this now-rival global chain. The two are still competing to win the title of the most beloved coffee in the US. Peet’s and Starbucks both signed a non-compete agreement in the Bay Area.

While Starbucks focuses on expansion to increase brand awareness and revenue generation, Peet’s decided to stay aligned with its core value: high-quality coffee. Therefore, Peet’s expansion has been much slower than Starbucks, while Starbucks is rocking the world with more than 35,000 stores. Peet’s Coffee’s First International Venture In Shanghai

In 2017, Peet’s decided to tap into the $44.5B-worth coffee market of China, with Shanghai being its first destination for the international venture. According to Global Times China, Shanghai has surpassed New York, London, and Tokyo to become the world’s newest coffee capital. As of June 2022, Shanghai plays host to 7,857 coffee shops.

Shanghai become the world’s newest coffee capital

Peet’s Shanghai takes over a 3,900 sq ft space. This is also an independently-run joint venture formed by Peet’s Coffee and Hillhouse Capital. Rather than just a pure coffee shop, Peet’s Shanghai has a mission to become an in-house roastery where customers can dine in by a “discover bar.”

Customers can experience what custom cups, tasting flights, and courses are all about. This meticulous coffee experience is led by Peet’s roasters and baristas.

In terms of appearance, customers are hooked by a state-of-the-art semi-circular design. A thoughtful lighting system shines its torch on the baristas and their hypnotizing work making espresso and hand-brewed coffee.

On top of that, Peet also sets up a “living wall” to bring nature indoors. Abundant plants of different varieties are incorporated into the store’s urban atmosphere to ventilate the air and spruce up customers’ dine-in experience. You might be wondering how does Peet’s decaffinate their coffee.

Best Drinks To Order From Peet’s

One of my favorite things about ordering with Peet’s is the playful experience of browsing its creative beverages. Other than the well-established pillar products such as latte or cappuccino, don’t forget to check out some of these best sellers I recommend below.

Cold Brew Fog

This specialty drink item has been around since 2017. Even though the drink is not available across all locations, make sure to keep an eye on it whenever you have a chance. Peet’s Cold Brew Fog incorporates the brand’s signature homemade cold brew with chicory root syrup before blending it well to achieve that perfectly creamy texture served over ice.

Once the drink is set, the full-bodied coffee comes out and delights your taste buds before the beautiful foamy head appears. This cold brew version is not insanely strong, thanks to the pleasant balance of sweet and creamy notes. I like to have it as a pick-me-up afternoon drink to beat the heat of a summer day.

Nitro Cold Brew

Peet’s unique Nitro Cold Brew got me falling in love at first sight. The complex texture is accompanied by a velvety mouthfeel and creamy finish that I barely see elsewhere.

Nitro Cold Brew has a bright, citrus-forward profile of East African Baridi coffee. When it washes down your throat, the smooth cocoa finish comes forward to complete the coffee’s medium roast profile.

If you’re wondering what nitro coffee is, it’s simply made by injecting nitrogen into cold coffee to achieve that bubbly, beer-like texture. This insanely cool beverage cannot go without a thick head of tasty foam.

Iced Lavender Matcha Latte

Peet’s Iced Lavender Matcha Latte is the best choice for adventurous coffee lovers. With matcha powder coming into play, the drink has a distinctive bitterness going forward on the first sip, accompanied by earthy, sweet, and floral notes of the lavender syrup. Finally, matcha is blended with cold milk before serving over ice.

What I like most about this drink is how Peet’s keeps their matcha as pure as possible without sweetening it. For that reason, the drink has a strong finish, giving your palate a pungent kick.

Churro Latte

Peet’s Churro Latte is a delightful beverage and can be enjoyed either hot or cold

Filling, hearty, and delicious, Peet’s Churro Latte is a delightful beverage steeped in the strong profile of espresso and balanced by sugar-infused milk and cinnamon syrup. This is one of the latest add-ins by the brand that can be enjoyed either hot or iced. Since the latte is toasty, buttery, and decadent, it will bring forward a dessert-like feeling without being overly sweet.

I like to order a hot churro latte during the coldest days of the year when Christmas is around the corner. It ticks all the boxes.

Best Peet’s Blends To Brew At Home

Peet’s Coffee Major Dickason’s Blend

Major Dickason’s Blend introduced me to Peet’s Coffee. It’s easy to see why it became the brand’s best-seller; this signature blend is a typical dark roast soaked in a robust, powerful profile.

This full-bodied coffee performs best with espresso, but it also works well with a French press. Those into lighter roast may not find this blend a remarkable coffee, but if you’re willing to step into the world of dark roast coffee, Major Dickason’s Blend should be the first one to walk you in.

Peet’s Coffee French Roast

Coffee-forward, wood smoke, and burnt caramel, Peet’s French Roast is the second best buy. It contributes a well-rounded chocolatey flavor that compliments everything you love about a typical French roast.

Albeit a dark roast, this coffee will not hold you back in doubt with harsh qualities. I like to play it up with a dash of cream and sugar to make a perfect morning pick-me-up.
