7 Best Coffee For V60

Brewing coffee in a V60 is a delicate process, but it is worth the wait. So, what is the best coffee for V60 to ensure your making the most of this brewer?

Brewing coffee in a V60 is a delicate process, but it is worth the wait

For a long time, I was always in a rush in the morning. I used to work in an office, so I only had a little time to get ready. As a result, I would either use my old coffee maker or buy a cup on my way to work.

Then, I started working from home, and I was no longer rushing to get coffee. So, I decided to try pour-over coffee instead of my regular drip machine, and it’s safe to say that my world was rocked to its core.

The reason pour-over coffee isn’t as ubiquitous as drip coffee is that it takes much more time to brew your favorite beverage. However, it’s well worth the wait if you have the time. I used to have to add lots of cream and sugar to make my bitter brews taste okay, but now, I rarely add much more than a dash of almond milk.

If you’re not convinced, check out our reasons why you should own a Hario V60 for your coffee. So, what is the best coffee for V60 brewers?

1. Lifeboost Medium Roast

Typically, medium and dark roasts work well for pour-over coffee because they have more oil and lower acidity levels. Lifeboost is one of the best coffee brands out there, thanks to its commitment to Fair Trade practices and sustainability.

I like the medium roast because it offers bold flavors without getting too intense. I tend to choose medium roasts no matter what, and Lifeboost has one of the best options out there. The secret is that the beans are shade grown, so they retain more of their natural elements and flavors.

These beans come from South America.

2. Fresh Roasted Coffee, Organic Honduran Marcala

If you like your coffee on the milder side, Fresh Roasted Coffee’s Organic Honduran Marcala blend is for you. Sourced from the Caribbean, this coffee is deliciously sweet with little acidity.

This medium roast has notes of baked apples, vanilla, and grapes. It makes for an incredibly smooth cup of Joe that’s even been compared to tea. You can choose from ground or whole-bean coffee.

To ensure you are using the correct grind size for a V60, it’s best to buy whole-bean coffee and prepare it yourself before brewing.

3. Volcanica Ethiopian Yirgacheffe

The Volcanica coffee brand is one of the most unique and flavorful brands I’ve tried. The name stems from the fact that all of the beans are grown in volcanic soil, giving them better nutrients and bolder flavors than you can find in regular farm-grown coffee. Also, the origin of each bag is printed right on the front.

In this case, the Yirgacheffe beans are harvested from Ethiopia, so they have a more distinct flavor than Central American or South American blends. While the beans are still Arabica, they’re infused with hints of fruits like lemon, blueberry, and blackberry.

As with Lifeboost, Volcanica is committed to providing the best coffee experience, so the brand only works with small farms to ensure better trade practices. However, despite the relatively limited quantities, this coffee is still pretty affordable.

4. Koa Coffee Grande Domaine

If you haven’t tried Hawaiian coffee yet, I highly recommend it. While these blends are a bit more expensive than what you can find elsewhere, the flavor profile is exquisite. Koa Coffee is one of my favorite Hawaiian brands, and the Grande Domaine Vienna Roast is perfect for the V60.

This medium dark roast is harvested by hand and uses the best cultivation methods to ensure that each bean has as much flavor as possible. This is another award-winning bean, so I still recommend buying something like this for special occasions. Plus, with a higher price point, you are more likely to brew with care.

If you’re unsure about paying so much for coffee beans, I would argue that they’re well worth the investment. However, if you’re not a coffee aficionado, you might not care about their meticulous production process.

5. Real Good Coffee Co. French Roast

French roast coffee is a bit more intense and flavorful than most dark coffees. However, the results are not bitter and acidic. Instead, high-quality French roast beans like these from Real Good Coffee Co. offer a smooth finish and lots of different tasting notes.

When drinking this coffee, particularly from the V60, you’ll taste hints of chocolate, raspberry, and anise. Plus, French roasts are more oily, so you get more flavor with each batch than you would with a French press or drip coffee maker.

6. Peet’s Coffee Luminosa Breakfast Blend

So far, I’ve shown you whole-bean blends, but Peet’s offers pre-ground coffee, which is more convenient. You do lose some flavor this way, but this particular Luminosa blend is tasty enough that you won’t notice as much of a difference, especially when brewing it in a pour-over device.

This is also the only light roast on this list, so it will have a much different flavor profile than the other beans I’ve mentioned. Nonetheless, this coffee is bright and cheerful and can give you a little pep in your step to start the day right. Also, at 12 ounces, you can make quite a few cups before needing a refill.

Peet's Coffee, Light Roast Ground Coffee

Light, sweet, aromatic. Luminosa means “shining" or "bright,” and this blend enlightens the subtle sweetness of Colombia with just the right touch of Ethiopian floral aromatics

7. Fresh Roasted Coffee Costa Rican Tarrazu

Last but certainly not least is this medium roast from Fresh Roasted Coffee Co. The beans come from a single farm in Costa Rica, and they have tasting notes of honey and chocolate. I really like the way these beans create such an aromatic effect, which also translates perfectly into my beverage.

I always recommend grinding your own beans, but doing so with this blend is better than most, thanks to the full sensory experience you get. Even if you’re using these beans in a drip coffee maker, you’ll still likely enjoy every last drop. If you liked this post, you might also be interested in our Chemex vs. V60 guide.

FAQs About The Best Coffee For V60

How To Make The Best Hario Coffee?

If you’re like me, you likely assumed that a coffee maker had to be an electronic device. So, when I first discovered the Hario V60, I thought it was odd that it was basically a ceramic funnel that stood over my mug. However, the simplicity of this product is partly why it’s so effective.
That said, the Hario isn’t going to make your coffee taste better magically. You must also source the right beans and use high-quality filters and purified water.

What Drinks Does A V60 Make?

You can make both hot and cold coffee with this brewer.
